Urusei Yatsura

Urusei Yatsura concerns the tempestuous relationship between two focal characters: Ataru Moroboshi who is possibly the most unfaithful, unlucky and lecherous idiot to have ever been born, and there's Lum, a tigerskin-bikini clad alien package of sex appeal, jealousy and electricity who's fallen for him. The series chronicles the misadventures of these two stubborn teenagers along with a veritable entourage of weird characters. Among these characters is the richest boy on the planet, a superhuman schoolgirl, a fire-breathing baby, a powerful priestess/school nurse, a cute and psychotic alien vixen with a split personality, a gender-bending martial artist, an alien biker chick, an ice queen of Neptune, a deranged monk, a giant ghost cat and hundreds of other lunatic personalities; aliens, humans and inhumans alike interract in endless hysteria in a town named Tomobiki.

ZhonLord Urusei Yatsura. Those Obnoxious Aliens. A more fitting title couldn’t have been made for this energetic, bombastic, hilarious piece of creativity and absolute INSANITY! This series is filled with the kind of humor that centers on things going horribly, deliciously wrong in every way possible, and unlike series such as Ranma 1/2 every character who’s hit by misfortune in this show genuinely deserves it – which enhances the humor even further. For the most part this is a comedic slice of life as the characters play off each other as naturally as breathing, or the show introduces one creative alien technology or another to raise the shenanigans even further, or the cast temporarily goes to other planets or locations for a change of pace. The main duo, Lum and Ataru, absolutely steal the show. Ataru is the 80’s definition of the universe’s biggest pervert, meaning he’s constantly asking girls out on dates and won’t hesitate to be a peeping tom or try to steal a kiss/hug/etc. Lum is a hyper-jealous, extremely competent and capable woman who is constantly trying to force Ataru to stay by her side. You could make a show entirely around that without even adding in the rest of the cast (see description above) and you’d have a riot of a show, but every new cast member expands the possibilities for comedy and storytelling even further. The sheer creativity the writers put into the sci-fi tech and alien races is fantastic, and there isn’t ONE SINGLE EPISODE in this long-running series that repeats the events of a previous episode. Presentation-wise the story favors rapid pace over consistently fluid animation, there are times where they employ the runny-eggs style in order to keep up with the pace happening on screen. With how long the show ran you also get to watch the quality and technique improve over time, from season 1 all the way to the finale. Music is pretty much constant throughout the series, using recurring themes in conjunction with certain types of events. But what ends up making the show a mainstay is that it’s not just about comedy and misfortune. The characters genuinely grow and change throughout the series, becoming stronger and better people – and you even get to watch moment by moment as Ataru and Lum grow to care deeply about each other instead of just on a surface level, becoming a real couple and risking their lives for each other. Yes, this show’s not all sunshine and rainbows, some episodes can get very dark and a large portion of the show is surprisingly serious. The world this show takes place in rapidly grows on the watcher, and aside from a few characters who only exist to be annoying the rest become sympathetic to one degree or another. The writing is straight-up fantastic. Overall, while there may be some episodes that are more irritating than enjoyable, the overall picture for Urusei Yatsura is an absolute riot that you’ll likely come back to again and again. It’s got laughs, cheers, jeers, sorrow and even fearful moments all throughout the show, and I guarantee you won’t regret checking this one out.
