mad, don't need long messages. I'm leaving reviews based on what is shown. As stated, this is picking up in the middle of a story, it's not at the beginning. It's boring and doesn't compare well to other anime that far exceed it, such as Food Wars. Take away the nostalgia that you feel for it and you wouldn't be speaking so highly. As I said, it's a 5 in that it can be enjoyed but it's nothing to boast about or encourage others to watch. It's just there....to watch if bored.

To be precise, Saoiray, this series uses a ton of old-school art styles. With a culturally abundant Chinese background. You kind of need to know anime to get this is a bit of a big deal, it's not meant to be a hit, it's meant to quench nostalgia. Considering the construct of the series, this is tied down to a very old LN series. Kind of like Dororo is made by the Father of Manga but it couldn't be sold to the current audience due to the EXTREMELY variant art style that almost gives the series a "childish" vibe, although it isn't that in the least bit. Which is why they changed the art style completely. However, in this series they decided to stick with the original type of design. Not to be a "know it all" either but it seems like you need a bit of background information on some of the subjects in this series to really get into it, one being the originating series. Another is some knowledge on Chinese cuisine and what a Silky Chicken's have become in today's society. Like in most history, domestic dishes in pre-industrial periods were basic, usually made of left overs, kind of like a Mexican dish that literally involved tortillas and eggs (You dice the tortillas up and fry them to a crisp, add your condiments, and then some scrambled eggs), which was used to feed whole families as a means to survive through strife and poverty. Which, if you know how these periods in history worked, "the poor" was in an all-time high. Going back to the Silky chicken, in today's society, Silky's are actually seen more often as pets than actual food. Usually placed in competitions more for their regal looks as opposed to their "taste" or versatility in a dish. With that said, you can start to plug-in how things work on this first episode, Silky's had no real "impact" to culinary development, but were more often seen as a means to survive within harsh poverty. As it's demonstrated in this episode. Of course, this hardly compares to the detail that is used in Food Wars but I will say that it is nice and refreshing to see a different type of series out there, I would also go on stretch and recommend reading up on this series. Judging a series by episode 1 is in very poor taste, pun intended. Now to tackle the categories that actually matter in rating a series, not just emotions: The art is very reminiscent of the luminescent highlights that Studio Ghibli uses on their characters, as well as small hints to the Father of Manga's original work Astro Boy, Dororo, and even Metropolis (film). Story-wise, we lack a bit of information, it's more-so that the character is just dropped on our laps and we have to figure out the "jist" of it all. Voice actors are far better than most trash series you usually where the VA does not match the character design or age. We do see some form of character development in the MC's EXTREMELY short backstory, as well as an early on installation of a "rival". In overall INITIAL rating, I would say it's a at least above average, 6/10 without any bias opinions; strictly speaking in construct. The loss of points would have to go to the fact it felt VERY rushed and of course left out A TON of important information. But realistically, how would you SLOWLY introduce an cooking anime when you have Food Wars's next season airing the same day this series also aired. In overall judgement, I hope people will give the series a try, the budget is clearly there, and it seems like the emotion put into each character is proportional to what you would see in a Ghibli character. With that said, I do agree, it isn't for everyone; but if you enjoy it, cheers! I'll be in for the ride, as I have to always rate any series with SOME "promising" attribute. Not to toot horns, this isn't me saying it's good, I'm just saying: Give it a bit, it's only on episode 2 after all.

This picks up as if it's a second or third season. The pacing is boring and compared to the many other cooking anime to already exist, it's lacking greatly. On a scale of 1-10, I'd rate this at roughly a 5. It's tolerable and can be entertaining but it's not going to be on the top of any lists.

This is a great season for anime. Yukihira Soma vs Liu Mao Xing. For those who dont know about this anime, this was launched 22 years ago. Its a sequel from where they lhave to find the remaining legendary cooking utensils.
