The series takes place in the near future, when it is possible to instantaneously measure and quantify a person's state of mind and personality. This information is recorded and processed, and the term "Psycho-Pass" refers to a standard used to measure an individual's being. The story centers around the "enforcement officer" Shinya Kougami, who is tasked with managing crime in such a world. In the future, it is possible to quantitatively measure a person's emotions, desires, and every inclination. In this way, it is also possible to measure a person's criminal tendency factor, which is used to judge criminals. This is the story of a team of policemen dedicated to maintaining public order. Some of them work in the Enforcement Division, responsible for the apprehension of criminals, while others belong to the Supervisory Division which oversees their colleagues in Enforcement.

ZhonLord DO NOT SPOIL ANYTHING FOR YOURSELF. The biggest plot twist has enormous ramifications on the rest of the story, DO NOT ruin it for yourself or you will very much regret it later. Now for the actual review:

ZhonLord Psycho Pass is the kind of story that all thrillers should aspire to equal. In a sci-fi world where machines can read minds to a degree, the constant questioning of whether it's right to live under such a system, the existence or nonexistence of free will in this world, and more besides, are just a few of the philosophical dilemmas posed with just a couple voice lines here and there, showing rather than telling. This series never preaches the dilemmas I just mentioned, except for certain antagonists who are trying to rebel against the Sybil System. It just shows the consequences of living in this world and leaves you to decide the answers for yourself, all the while telling a powerful police/detective story with great pacing and excellent characters. I can't begin to praise this cast enough, every character has a style and personality that makes them incredibly unique. All of their personalities are well written, have multiple layers of depth, and their words and actions play off each other as naturally as breathing. Akane takes center stage as the young optimist detective, but as she begins to fully grasp the reality around her she grows in surprising directions; managing to retain her optimism until true injustice occurs and then beginning to take matters into her own hands. By the end her determination is practically radiating off the screen, confident, capable and at the same time melancholy for reasons I won't spoil. The world is fantastic, portraying a Japan that has cut itself off from the rest of the world and the people within it either following the system or trying to rebel against it - or falling somewhere on the sidelines. The ways that Sybil integrates into everyone's lives makes it clear that few question its presence or necessity, even as people are sorted into the areas that they will do best in as their minds and wills are analyzed and given flat numbers. The plot is well-paced to make sure every emotional moment has time to sink in without dragging, the action is fast-paced and the discussion scenes effective at building up tension. And when the brains behind the Sybil System are revealed near the end, it's a straight-up punch to the gut as it changes the entirety of how this world is viewed by both the characters and the viewer. Don't spoil this for yourself, it's hugely important to see the reveal as it's intended to be shown. Normally I take a moment to talk about the animation and music, but quite frankly the story is too captivating to give anything else space in my already-long reviews. Just watch it, beginning to end, and be ready for one of the best cop/detective stories you'll find for a long time.
