ZhonLord One of two out-of-the-park stories from ONE, One Punch Man is a superhero anime that shows us the perspective of a hero who's so strong that nothing ends up being a challenge for him, to the point where he starts off the show longing for a worthy opponent. However, no one else in the world recognizes him as such. To them he's just a hero for fun, or just a random bald creep. For all Saitama's power he has very little ability to connect with others on a personal level, he just wants to be a hero but doesn't know how to get others to accept him as one. It isn't until he meets Genos that he finally learns the steps to become an officially recognized hero. And from there the cast explodes into the entirety of the series: all the different heroes and villains that start showing up, the Hero Association with all its good and bad aspects, the ordinary folk who throw monkey wrenches into everything, etc. ONE does a fantastic job portraying powerful characters as shockingly ordinary outside of the use of those abilities, and I'm not just talking about Saitama. And the way the various characters play off each other is fantastic to say the least - especially the hyper-eccentric S-class Heroes and the "calling him slimeball isn't a spoiler" Amaii Mask. And the animation, oh the wonderful animation. It combines explosions of vibrant color with in-fight character perspectives, easily tracking rapid movements and flashy abilities while still giving weight to movements and impacts. The animators had to have worked their fingers to the bone to pull this off and it shows the passion and dedication they put into it. At the same time, the absolute blandness of most of Saitama's expressions and out-of-combat motion is a counterpoint to the other heroes around him for quite the humorous payoff. The music is well suited to the series, but unlike ONE's other series Mob Psycho this show's music demands attention in its own right; it makes the big conflicts into proper super faceoffs, and enhances the humor of many scenes very well - not to mention the opening is just plain fantastic. One Punch Man is one of the most entertaining superhero stories ever made, and well worth coming back to over and over again.
