Rikuo Nura appears to be an average middle school student. No one knows that he comes home every day to a house full of youkai, nor that he transforms into the all-powerful leader of these spirits at night. However, much to the disappointment of many, Rikuo is determined to live as normal a life as possible.

ZhonLord Episode 1 makes Nurarihyon no Mago looks like it’s going to be a cheesy “I want a normal human life” modern yokai story, but there is far more going on than that. Rikuo is a human/yokai hybrid, with two forms (and two personalities) as a result. He is the Third Heir to the position of Supreme Commander of All Yokai following his grandfather and deceased father, and resists the role of leadership in his human form while embracing it in his yokai form. The story revolves around two minor plot elements and one major. The minors are Rikuo’s desire to keep this side of him from his human friends, for a multitude of reasons; and his slow acceptance of both his powers and his role as a leader and protector. The major plot is a clan war between various groups of Yokai all seeking to tear down the once-powerful Nura Clan that Rikuo will one day inherit, which ramps up in both danger and cast variety as the story progresses. The human cast is very enjoyable; from the exorcist girl with great talent but low maturity, to the yokai enthusiast who never quite gets to see one, the relatively small number of humans in Season 1 means they each have quite a bit of screentime to develop their characters and show their likeable traits. The yokai on the other hand have staggering number that come and go throughout Season 1, so their personalities are often shallowed up to fit the runtime. There are a few specific gems of character, like Gyuki, and all of them are interesting or enjoyable in their own ways, but more often than not there simply isn’t enough time even with 24 episodes to see the depth of all of these personalities – there’s that many. Music is simple but effective at what it needs to do. Many of the action scenes use well-placed cutaways to cover the lack of on-screen activity, while making it seem like the yokai are moving faster than the eye can travel to compensate for some of the lost presentation. Emotional expressions are definitely good, conveying exactly what they need to. But the standout piece for this show is its atmosphere. I have yet to find another yokai story that so expertly captures the ethereal nature of these spirits, demons and monsters. They have elements of wonder and horror, playfulness and malice, and even a few seconds are all it takes to make the watcher feel like they truly are encountering something that defies full comprehension. Nurarihyon won’t be winning any groundbreaker awards, but it’s a very solid yokai story that captures the feel of what these kinds of stories should present. Absolutely worth watching, and one of my personal favorites.
