the manga and anime series have different endings, this I believe is following the manga now. Joe blames himself for the old mans death and sees him every so often.

i don't think he actually died he just lost the other eye since he still coached joe on the last fight even though he was blind

you've apparently never seen the first season. The old man dies to pay back a debt to the crooks that tried to blackmail joe into losing and bc joe refused to go down in the fight in the end instead of taking a dive the old man basically took joe's punishment for him. at least thats how i remember it going down. Joe wasnt around when it all went down so i think he feels guilty for his death.

I bet the old man died and joe feels guilty abt it. That would explain why he seems to show up and disappear out of no where and why joe is so depressed. Prob during the disaster that happened a year ago.
