ZhonLord The biggest issue with most survival game stories, is that the rewards do not match the stakes involved. There’s no real reason for the chosen group to fight each other to the death, or the reasons given are straight-up dumb. Future Diary looked at that problem, said “hold my beer” and turned both the stakes, and the rewards, up to Cosmic. This show is a survival game anime that pushes the boundaries of the genre. The basic premise, each contestant being able to tell the future in different ways, makes it much more of a Death Note style chess game than the actual direct combat, though there is obviously going to be a lot of fighting involved, and the stakes of either dying or becoming the next God certainly act as a powerful motivator. Each diary owner is wonderfully unique, with their own strengths, weaknesses, and damning personality flaws that come back to bite them time and again. Outside of the main duo I’d say Fifth is my favorite, and Sixth is the most tragic. As to the main Duo, Yuki fills the role of a disinterested observer suddenly flung into a struggle just to survive. He’s the least combat-capable of all the Diary owners, and the most kindhearted to his enemies, and while it may be obvious he’ll be the final victor since he’s the show’s central focus the way he gets to that point is WONDERFULLY unpredictable. And then you have his counterpart, Gasai Yuno, who will hold the crown of “Apotheosis of Yandere” for decades to come. She is wonderfully, horrifyingly psychotic on every front – unpredictable moodswings, brutally efficient, quick on her feet and quick to kill. The full depths of her story are fantastic, especially as we reach the final episodes and learn the source of her madness. On the presentation side the animation is absolutely gorgeous – detailed emotional expressions, intense action, subtle use of atmospheric colors to drive home a specific emotion, you name it they’ve got it. It’s a straight-up passion project of animation. Music mostly blends into the background and doesn’t call attention to itself, yet it’s always present and enhancing the mood there as well. The pacing on this one is absolutely brutal, only giving the occasional breather before jumping right into the next set of events. I do not recommend marathoning this one, you’ll want to sit back and process things now and then. The overarching story is excellent, from the actions of each diary owner to the full story behind Yuno to the final conflict across time itself. If you like thriller stories even a little, I strongly recommend giving Future Diary a try – just be ready for a lot of things to go very, very wrong. When finished with this series, you also need to check out the one-episode OVA: Redial. (Also stick around after the credits each episode for some extra information from Deus’s right-hand imp, Murmur).

guiae It's pretty good (at least enjoyable) up until around episode 19 or 20. From then on it gets into confusing-ass time travel and multiple timelines, and gives some of the characters superpowers and just is generally a shitty ending to a decent show. Action without superpowers is done quite well. Action with superpowers is shit. Final ending is shit. Overall: Good ride, some genuinely creepy moments from Yuno. 6/10
