(Veteran Lupin fans please skip to the next comment down) For those of you discovering Lupin for the first time, welcome to a long-running series about a master thief, his closest companions and their constant rival having escapades all around the world. Lupin the Third has gone through several iterations, each identified by a change in color of the main character’s coat, and this Blue Coat version is the latest version. If you have the drive to go watch everything then you’re in for a treat, but it’s not necessary to do so. Any season of the show can be jumped into with no context from previous ones, and you’ll be able to get the gist of the series very easily – a constant parade of heists, hijinks and a cast so thoroughly likeable (or love-to-hate-able) that you’ll be rooting for them the entire way. The core team consists of our titular master thief and master of disguise Lupin, a mysoginistic ace gunman named Jigen, a ronin named Goeman whose legendary sword can cut through any material, and a literal femme fatale who’s a sometimes-friend sometimes-rival named Fujiko. Their rival is Zenigata, aka Pops, the straight-shooting bloodhound of Interpol who’s always able to track Lupin down and is extraordinarily good at his job – except Lupin and crew are better so he rarely catches them and never holds them. Joining them in this season is a recurring character named Rebecca Rossolini, a wealthy thrill seeker who seeks to break her constant boredom with the world she lives in. Presentation is fantastic, great pacing and humor, and you’ll know from the very first episode whether you will like the franchise or not. Give it a try, you’re in for some of the best straight-up fun that a series about criminals is capable of.

(For those familiar with Lupin) Welcome to Blue-Coat Lupin the Third, the latest iteration of the iconic master thief. Several differences to note for those who’ve been following Lupin until now. First and foremost, Lupin’s personality in this new iteration is much more serious. There’s never a point where he just loses himself laughing, he’s constantly looking at everything around him as a new challenge, and there’s an intensity to him that’s never been there before. His sense of humor and typical perversion are still present, just subdued, and he still gets in mischief and trouble with familiar panic moments, but it only takes the edge off rather than detracting from this. Call it personal preference but I like it a lot. Zenigata is also the most dangerously competent he’s ever been, never loses his self-control or making himself look like an incompetent idiot. He interacts with a few other criminals besides Lupin in this series, and the ease with which he handles them clearly shows just how skilled he is – and how clear it is that only Lupin is able to make a fool out of him. The next big difference is that both this season, and the Part 5 that follows, are focused around longer story arcs that the series has never really attempted before, and it works extraordinarily well. A more structured story with ongoing elements from one episode to the next gives the cast a lot more to work with even if it gives a different feel. This is also the first series to bring a multi-episode recurring character into the mix instead of an occasional cameo – Rebecca Rossolini, a thrill seeker who literally starts the first MINUTE of this season by marrying Lupin. Animation follows the more serious tone of the stories, sharper lines, less goofy appearances, but it still captures the energy and wow-factor the series is known for. Music is the usual iconic excellence, nothing to speak ill of. Overall, if you’ve enjoyed Lupin up til now you have every reason to keep going, so start it up and enjoy the ride through beautiful Italy.
