Guilty Crown

The story takes place in Tokyo in 2039, after the outbreak of the "Apocalypse Virus" during what became known as the "Lost Christmas" of 2029. Since then, Japan has been under the control of the multinational organization called GHQ. Ouma Shu is a 17 year-old boy who mistakenly obtains a rare and great power. He can use this power, "The Right Hand of the King," to extract "voids," or tools/weapons that are the manifestations of peoples' hearts. He has been rather shy since a childhood tragedy, but both his personality and life change forever when he meets a girl named Yuzuriha Inori, a member of the rebel group called "Funeral Parlor," whose members seek the restoration of self-government in Japan via the ousting of GHQ.

TheOddWaffle The fucking ending man. If you don’t like it from the start give up on it. I know that’s a bad review but honestly that’s how it is.

ZhonLord To preface, I had a difficult time trying to review this one. It is such a mixed bag of good and bad that it can be hard to decide whether one outweighs the other, but in the end for me the good aspects won out. Guilty Crown takes place in a world where a highly contagious "cancer" turns people to crystal and kills them, and certain people such as the main character gain the ability to wield literal embodiments of other people's souls - and it's obvious immediately that this power and the "plague" are connected. The first part of the anime focuses on his discovery of power. Good introduction to the world and characters, some strong emotional impacts, good plot and character use overall. The second part, also the strongest aspect of the show, is when he takes charge and steps into the forefront as a combatant - confidence shines, hope grows, and everyone becomes stronger by working together. The third part is where it starts to come apart at the seams, as he suffers from a trope trauma and immediately does a 180 with how he views and treats people, and you can immediately start seeing where each step will go and how it will progress. It becomes almost painfully predictable, which cripples the emotional impact of what is occurring - not to mention it's a complete insult to the growth he had gone through previously to fall this far for this long a period. The fourth and final part, old faces return, enemies make their stands, and while it makes a huge recovery from the third quarter in terms of engagement and character development, it leads up to a finale that is a straight-up cop-out. Aside from their treatment of the main lead, the rest of the cast on the rooting-for side are well developed. They're smart enough to question things, care about taking action and want to do what's best for themselves and the people around them, and have a variety of personalities that makes them interesting to watch and their reactions to events quite different at times. The antagonists on the other hand.... very, VERY underdeveloped. There was so much potential with the bad guys in this one that got squandered, wasted or straight-up ignored at times. The animation is consistently good, though I wouldn't say it stands out. Emotions are expressed well, the action sequences are intense and quite creative at times, and the huge variety of Voids that are shown is one of the high points of the series. The music is also well-suited to the scenes, and enhance the atmosphere well - and as a bonus one of the main characters is a singer so there are times where the music takes center stage in a good way. All in all, Guilty Crown is definitely worth watching at least once but your mileage will vary on whether the strong positive characters, creativity, action and excellent first half will compensate for the weak third quarter, underdeveloped enemies and not-quite-Gainax-Ending. Give it a try and weigh the good and bad aspects for yourself.
