ZhonLord There aren't enough good things to say about this anime. While the premise may sound like "sherlock holmes but", Gosick takes a very different direction even from the early episodes. For starters the main characters, Victorique and Kujo, complement each other rather than one being a witness to the other's greatness. Kujo's actions and even his insights often help solve each mystery the characters come across. Victorique's circumstances, both her current state and how she came to be, also lay the groundwork for a darker story that lurks around the edges. Over the course of the story, while each set of episodes focuses on one mystery at a time, bits and pieces pull together into an overarching plot that leads naturally into what occurs in the final episodes. I could go on and on about how fantastic the writing is. The characters are excellent too, all of them have well written personalities that play off each other and help move the story forward. Inspector Blois manages to be hilarious, genuine and serious all at the same time, Victorique's sudden bounces to the child she is as a result of experiencing something new are straight-up adorable, and Kujo's growth from someone who thought he was expendable into a confident self-contained person is a treat to behold. The biggest surprise for me was actually the intro credits. Much like tarot cards, it shows bits and pieces of the future without revealing the full details until after the events they reference have occurred. As the show goes on, the introduction takes on more and more meaning as you tie each image to its associated event - particularly what happens in the stage light-up. Overall, what starts off as a mystery show grows into something so heartwarming that you'll end up in tears of both joy and sorrow. Don't you dare pass this one up.
