Fate/Zero takes place 10 years prior to the events of Fate/stay night, detailing the events of the 4th Holy Grail War in Fuyuki City. The War of the Holy Grail is a contest in which seven magi summon seven Heroic Spirits to compete to obtain the power of the "Holy Grail," which grants a miracle. After three inconclusive wars for the elusive Holy Grail, the Fourth War commences. Founded by the Einzbern, Makiri, and Tohsaka families centuries ago, the Einzbern family is determined to achieve success after three successive failures, no matter the cost. As a result, they have elected to bring the hated magus killer, Kiritsugu Emiya, into their ranks, despite his methods and reputation as a skilled mercenary and a hitman who employs whatever he can use to accomplish his goals. Though Kiritsugu had once wanted to become a hero who could save everyone, he has long since abandoned this ideal upon realizing that saving one person comes at the cost of another's life. For the sake of humanity, he will ruthlessly destroy anything and anyone who threatens the peace of others. However, Kiritsugu finds himself deeply torn between the love he has found for his new family—his wife Irisviel and their daughter Illya—and what he must do to obtain the Holy Grail. Meanwhile, Kiritsugu's greatest opponent appears in the form of Kirei Kotomine, a priest who cannot find any sense of fulfillment in his life and sets his sights on Kiritsugu as the possible answer to the emptiness he feels.

Zera Best of all Fate/... series for me :)

Chypotlay High quality production but not as entertaining as I hoped. There is just too much exposition and long dialogues in it and very few action & horror scenes as a reward. Some episodes are just dragging along and at the end of it there was no progress at all. Watching the character set interact was however very entertaining. When fight scenes happen they are absolutely gorgeous to watch.

ZhonLord Out of all the various Fate/ series, Zero is the one I have most frequently heard as being the best of them; and after watching it I can see why. In this show, each of the seven modern-day participants are taking part in the contest by choice; no "I didn't want this", no "what's going on", no "let's just hide and survive". And each of the seven summoned "Heroes" of the past are well aware of the stakes involved in fighting over the Holy Grail to get their specific wishes granted. The cast is wonderfully varied, just to name a few: a forgotten savior, kings wanting to enjoy themselves, raging demons, vile mages who will stop at nothing to get their way, a high school kid out to prove himself, an assassin trying to do something for the family he's come to love. The animation is excellent most of the time, each fight is well detailed and every action carries its own weight; the dialogue scenes are rather flat to compensate in budget however, so don't expect fully animated body motions except for the most energetic characters. The music is an excellent compliment to the story, each piece well chosen to enhance the atmosphere and emotional impact of the scenes. There are two major weaknesses to Fate/Zero, however; one is revealed in episode 1 that King Arthur is actually a woman named Arthuria; a gender change that doesn't make sense beyond "the writers wanted it" and it could actually fit in the original King Arthur lore. The second weakness is unfortunately a part of the finale when an aspect of the Holy Grail is made known. It makes sense, but for me it didn't achieve the emotional impact it was meant to - too out of nowhere, and too intentionally tragic. Aside from that however this is a solid anime with fantastic characters, great combat, good pacing and the overall feel of a grand epic even while it's actually a survival game. Fate/Zero is well worth watching at least once, especially if you've tried other Fate/ series or are looking for one of the stronger versions. Also Alexander the Great is amazing.
