IntenseIntrovert Urgh. I have a de ja vu... I wrote quite a long post some episodes ago, where I was ranting and raging about the heavily overused, stupid anime trope of 'a girl violently hits a boy to show her affection' and I said that the physical violence is never cute, funny or acceptable, regardless of the sex/gender of who hits and who is being hit. It's especially overused theme with abnormally violent anime girls, but it does't matter who is the victim and who is the abuser - it just shouldn't be used and treated as 'normal' in animated stories at all. And that rule still applies whenever I see Ichigo's father physically abusing his son. I'm sorry, I know some people would say I exaggerate, and I've tried to be more 'tolerant and patient', and I've also tried to treat it as a kind of 'harmless and dumb comedy relief motif', but NO, I can't, I absolutely REFUSE to just brush it off and laugh at it and enjoy it. What's 'enjoyable' about it? It irks me, annoys me, angers me, shocks me, bothers me, triggers me and sets me off whenever and wherever I see it. I wholeheartedly HATE it, with a burning passion, every single time this kind of 'loving violence' appears on the screen, in this or in any other anime. But with Ichigo's father it's especially unpleasant, because he seems to abuse ALL his three children from the beginning of the story. With his little daughters it's the verbal abuse - I mean some things he said to them in some early episodes were HIGHLY disturbing, inappropriate, unhealthy and simply CREEPY... And with his son, meaning Ichigo - it's a physical abuse. Yes I know, some people might argue that 'he was just trying to prepare his son for the harsh life experiences', because he predicted that sooner or later he would be targeted by the bad guys, whether Hollows or Shinigami, etc etc etc... And that by constantly preparing some stupid 'traps' for him at home, jumping at him from the shadows, kicking him, hitting him, and knocking him on the ground - he was simply 'practising some self-defence and martial arts movements'. Yeah... maybe. But it still looked and felt like brutal violence. Not funny. Not cute. Not acceptable. He could just train his son in a .. you know... NORMAL way. Some people would say: "But he couldn't tell him the truth, and he had to prepare him exactly for those UNEXPECTED attacks''. Again - yeah... maybe. But the result of his 'loving parental upbringing' is that even here, in this episode - the first thing he does, to 'protect' his son from the strongest enemy is to... violently HEADBUTT him and brutally HIT him, until he falls down from the roof...I mean... that's nice, I guess? And as a viewer, I should be happy about his unexpected help, I guess? I should consider it 'cute and funny', and I should just accept the 'anime logic' where the father-son moments like this are considered a 'tender reunion' examples, I guess? ... So I do my best to be 'patient', and I sit in front of my screen, trying my hardest to 'enjoy it' even though it's shockingly stupid and disappointingly dumb - and I hear Ichigo telling his father those precise precious words of wisdom: "Thanks for hitting me, dad. It makes me feel like home'..... And I just SNAP. Nope. I'm sorry, I can't. There is only SO MUCH stupidity in anime I can take, so thank you VERY MUCH for that kind of 'entertainment', but I think I will pass. So, as always, I will just remain weirded out, keep my mental distance and save my sanity, whenever that strange madman, aka Ichigo's father, appears on the screen. Some people have compared him to Guy sensei in Naruto, and indeed, some of his overenthusiastic fatherly scenes did bring Guy's figure to my mind too. But Guy, with all his strange quirks, wasn't insane or violent towards any students under his care, while Ichigo's father is violent towards his own children. I mean... That's great that he was doing his best to train Ichigo's 'self-defence instincts' right from his childhood days... And that's also great that he comes to his son's rescue here in this fight, and that he finally reveals his true identity... That's all great, fine and fantastic... But the way he does it is just WRONG on so many levels that I can't even begin to properly express it. Why can't he be an ADULT, even when facing the worst danger? Why can't he be a SERIOUS, RELIABLE and MATURE father, at least ONCE? And that scene where his own son is THANKING him for HITTING him, because 'that feels like home' is just TOO MUCH for me. That should be used as some kind of creepy meme, exemplifying the ''typical, loving, pathological, disfunctional anime family''. For me this kind of 'funny' motives are just one big steaming pile of BS. ---- I'm still curious about mr Kurosaki's story, of course, and I did like Ichigo's mature approach to his father's mystery. But that's also part of my point - Ichigo is still technically an underage highschool student (altough he doesn't look that way with his manly frowning face and his muscular body of a seasoned warrior), but the fact that he is SO much more emotionally and mentally mature than his own middle-aged father is just RIDICULOUS. So, summing up - I'm very sorry, but it's one of those VERY RARE Bleach episodes which I DIDN'T enjoy. And I won't change my mind about it, because that kind of primitive 'sense of humour' just RUINS every good story for me, so I hope to NEVER see it again... or at least as rarely as possible. HMPF!

15-year-old Kurosaki Ichigo is not your everyday high school student. He has from as far he can remember always had the ability to see ghosts and spirits. A fateful day arrives as Ichigo encounters the shinigami Kuchiki Rukia, who saves him and his family from a Hollow at the cost of injuring herself. During this encounter, with Rukia unable to defeat the hollow she transfers her shinigami powers into Ichigo. In the aftermath, unable to continue with her job, Rukia allows Ichigo to take on the role of a shinigami in her place as they together defeat the Hollows plaguing Ichigo's town.
